Starodubtseva makes it to the 2024 US Open main draw in a strong-willed style

Having successfully overcome three rounds of qualification, Yulia joined six compatriots who will start the major from the first round

Ukrainian tennis player Yulia Starodubtseva won a strong-willed victory over the British woman Sonay Kartal in the final qualification US Open 2024.

The match lasted two hours and one minute. The first set went to the representative of Great Britain – 6:2 with two breaks and a flawless serve.

And then the Ukrainian managed to turn the game around. The second set started surprisingly: with five consecutive triumphs on the opponent’s serves. Having achieved a minimal advantage, Starodubtseva did not miss hers: a break point in the ninth game as a major chord and 6:3.

The third set was an equal fight for a long time, and the decisive moment came at the score 4:3 in favor of Yulia, when she took over Kartal’s serve. Again 6:3 – a comeback and entry into the main draw of the American major.

Let us recall that in the previous rounds of the selection, Starodubtseva defeated Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva from Andorra (6:2, 6:1) and Xinyu Gao from China (6:3, 4:6, 6:0). Three more Ukrainians – Anastasia Soboleva, Kateryna Zavatska and Daria Snigur – were unable to overcome the tournament qualification.

Yulia became the seventh Ukrainian tennis player in the main draw of the US Open 2024. Let us remind you that today her compatriots learned their opponents in the first round of the tournament. Marta Kostyuk will play McCartney Kessler from the USA, Elina Svitolina will fight with Argentine Maria Lourdes Carle, Dayana Yastremska will face German Julia Niemeyer, Angelina Kalinina – Frenchwoman Oceane Dodin, and Lesya Tsurenko – American Peyton Stearns. Finally, Kateryna Beindl, who got into the main draw by “protected rating”, got Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto as her opponent.
