Ukrainian leaves US Open 2024 after opening match
Ukrainian tennis player Lesya Tsurenko lost to an American Payton Stearns in the first round US Open 2024.
The match lasted 1 hour and 43 minutes. In the first set, Stearns had an absolute advantage, winning with two breaks with a score of 6:1.
The second set was more competitive on the Ukrainian side – Tsurenko took her opponent’s serve twice, but still lost 5:7.
Overall, Stearns’ victory looks more than deserved. She had a more than five-fold advantage in terms of the number of winners (26 to 5), but the American made many unforced errors (39 to Lesya’s 25), which meant that Tsurenko had a small chance to at least take the game to a third set.
In the second round of the 2024 US Open, Stearns will face the “neutral” Daria Kasatkina. Let us recall that among the Ukrainians, Elina Svitolina and Angelina Kalinina made it to the second round, and by the will of the draw, they will now face each other in a face-to-face duel. Marta Kostyuk, Kateryna Beindl and Yulia Starodubtseva will also play their first round matches of the 2024 US Open.
