Tennis players from aggressor countries can participate in the US Open.
Russian and Belarusian tennis players may be allowed to participate in the US Open. According to the Mirror, the organizers of the competition initially planned to follow the path of Wimbledon and remove players from the aggressor countries from participating in the Grand Slam tournament.
However, a possible confrontation with international tennis federations and the athletes’ removal of points for participation forced them to come up with a new plan.
Now they want to involve the Russians and Belarusians in helping Ukraine. The US Tennis Association has announced a fundraising event for the people of Ukraine in the form of a charity match to be held on Ukraine’s Independence Day.
The Americans decided to invite tennis players from Russia and Belarus to this event and make a joint statement. At the moment it is known that the former first racket of the world Victoria Azarenka, representing Belarus in the international arena, agreed to participate in this project. Representatives of the tennis elite from other countries – Rafael Nadal and Iga Sventek – will also be represented there.
It is not yet reported what will happen to the players of the aggressor countries that refuse to help Ukraine.
