The Ukrainian gave the favorite a fight in the first set, but lost the second one.
Ukrainian tennis player Katerina Beindl lost to the representative of Italy Elisabette Cocciaretto in the first round match of the main draw US Open 2024.
Being in the status of a clear underdog (329th racket of the world against 65th), the Ukrainian tried to cling to the result in the first set – losing 1:5, she won back two set points, took two games in a row, but still suffered a defeat 3:6. In the second set, there was no fight – a dry victory for the Italian.
Let us recall that a record number of Ukrainian tennis players – seven – started in the main draw of the US Open this year. Only three of them managed to overcome the first round barrier – the first racket of Ukraine Marta Kostyuk, as well as Elina Svitolina and Angelina Kalinina, who will play each other in the second round by the will of the draw.
In addition to Beindl, Lesia Tsurenko, Dayana Yastremska and Yulia Starodubtseva, the only Ukrainian to make it through the three-round qualifying sieve, finished their performances at the major in the first round.
