“It was a question of who would last the longest.” Evans on his victory over Khachanov in record-breaking US Open match

British tennis player Daniel Evans spoke about his feelings after beating Russian Karen Khachanov in the first round of the US Open.

Evans defeated his opponent with a score of 6:7 (6:8), 7:6 (7:2), 7:6 (7:4), 4:6, 6:4. The duration of the meeting was 5 hours 35 minutes. The match between the Russian and the Briton set the record for the longest match at the US Open.

– Yeah, it was a long fight. It was a very long battle. I played pretty well for most of the match. Obviously, it was tough on me physically, but it was tough on him too. In the end, it was about who could last the longest.

When you start playing tennis as a kid, you’re just told to always fight until the end. That’s kind of the number one rule. I’ve done that pretty consistently throughout my career. And eventually, it’s paid off in some way.

“I’m very proud to have finished this match. I think that’s the most important feeling. It’s good to win a match like this,” Evans said at a press conference.

The previous record for the longest match at the US Open belonged to the semi-final between Stefan Edberg (Sweden) and Michael Chang (USA). The game took place in 1992 and lasted 5 hours 26 minutes.
