Kalinina on her loss to Svitolina: I tried to do what I could, but she played very well today

Ukrainian ends US Open 2024

Ukrainian tennis player Angelina Kalinina commented on the defeat from her compatriot Elina Svitolina in the second round of singles US Open 2024.

“It was a tough match for me. I tried to do what I could, but unfortunately she played very well today. High level. Apparently, she couldn’t do everything she planned. But she played the way she played. It was a good match.”

“Did I make any changes to my game compared to the last fight? That’s a secret. They didn’t work. When they do work, then we’ll discuss it. But unfortunately, I couldn’t do what I planned,” Kalinina said.

The duel between the two Ukrainians was entirely dictated by Elina. In the first set, Angelina managed to take only one game, in the second set – two. During the match, Svitolina served eight aces, making five double faults. Kalinina had one ace and six double faults.

Interestingly, Kalinina was playing at the US Open for the sixth time and lost in the second round for the fourth time. It was also the second meeting of the season between Kalinina and Svitolina, and in both cases Elina won.

In the women’s singles, in addition to Svitolina, Marta Kostyuk continues to perform. In the first round, Kateryna Baindl, Lesia Tsurenko, Dayana Yastremska and Yulia Starodubtseva, the only Ukrainian who managed to overcome the three-round qualification sieve, finished their performances at the major.
