Alena Ostapenko from Latvia did not abandon her doubles partner Lyudmila Kichenok.
Lyudmila Kichenok and Alena Ostapenko from Latvia made a successful start to the US Open in doubles.
The duo, seeded seventh in the tournament, defeated US representatives Jessie Ani/Jessica Failla in the first round – 6:3, 6:3.
However, a very unpleasant moment occurred in the match, because of which the Ukrainian and Latvian almost ended the competition. Ostapenko, while making one of her serves, hit Kichenok with the ball directly in the head. Lyudmila suffered a painful shock, but quickly recovered and continued the fight.

Note that this is not the first time Ostapenko has shown this in major tournaments. Earlier, at Wimbledon 2019, Alena hit her partner Robert Lindstedt in the head twice in mixed doubles.
We remind you that Elina Svitolina previously knocked out Angelina Kalinina in the US Open.
