Athletistic/Tennis. The second round matches of the 2024 US Open began on Wednesday, August 28, with defending champion Novak Djokovic advancing past Laslo Djere after he was forced to retire early in the third set due to injury.

Coco Gauff continued her title defense with a convincing 6-4, 6-0 victory over Tatiana Maria. Aryna Sabalenka extended her winning streak with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Lucia Bronzetti. Taylor Fritz beat former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini in straight sets. Andrey Rublev recovered from two sets down to beat Arthur Rinderknech 4-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 in a hard-fought victory.

But not all the favourites managed to qualify. The main sensations of the day:

Daria Kasatkina

The 12th seed Kasatkina was eliminated by American Peyton Stearns, who beat her 6-1, 7-6 (3). It was Kasatkina’s second straight loss to Stearns, who also knocked her out of Roland Garros a few months ago.

It’s another early exit for the Russian, who has only advanced past the second round of a Grand Slam tournament once this year, at Wimbledon. And there, she immediately lost in the third round. As for Stearns, she reached the third round of the US Open for the second year in a row. She will now try to match her career-best performance at the US Open and reach the fourth round, but to do so, she will first have to get past 24th seed Donna Vekic.

Hugo Humbert

The 17th-seeded Humbert was the highest-ranked tennis player eliminated on Wednesday. Argentina’s Francisco Comesana beat him 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. The Frenchman’s losing streak at the US Open continued, with Humbert now 3-7 at the US Open, losing in the first round four times at this TBS and advancing to the second round three more times. Meanwhile, Comesana now has a unique record on the ATP Tour. All four of his main-draw wins this year have come at TBS. Comesana made headlines when he knocked out sixth-seeded Andrey Rublev at Wimbledon a few weeks ago and eventually lost in the third round. He will face 12th-seeded Taylor Fritz in the next round.

Barbora Krejcikova

The biggest upset of the day was Krejcikova, the eighth seed and reigning Wimbledon champion, who lost to qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse, with the Romanian winning 6-4, 7-5.

Krejcikova became the highest-rated tennis player to exit the US Open. Ruse, meanwhile, advanced to the third round of TBS for the first time in singles. She will next face Paula Badosa for a spot in the fourth round.
