Jessica Pegula, Caroline Wozniacki and Daniil Medvedev are also in the third round, but not all the favorites managed to advance further. The main sensations of the day:
Naomi Osaka
After an impressive performance against world number 10 Jelena Ostapenko, Osaka’s New York tournament ended in the second round against Karolina Muchova.
Osaka played evenly with Muchova early on, then lost four games in a row to lose the set. The former world number one served for the second set and even had three set points, but missed them. She also led 4-2 in the tiebreaker, but lost the match again and lost the match 3-6, 6-7.
Mirra Andreeva
Andreeva was the only Russian to be eliminated on the fourth day of play. She failed to defeat world number 59 Ashlyn Kruger, losing almost without a fight. The first set was lost with a crushing score of 1-6, then with a score of 2-5 Andreeva took a break, but Kruger still led the case to a 6:4 victory. Andreeva, after the furore at Roland Garros, failed at Wimbledon and the US Open.
Hubert Hurkacz
Hurkacz became the first ATP top-10 player to exit the US Open. He led Jordan Thompson 5-2 in the first set before losing it in a tiebreaker. Then, he simply gave up the second match 1-6.
Hurkacz had a set point at 5-4 in the third set, but failed to capitalize on it, sealing his defeat. Thompson did not forgive his mistake and won 7-6 (2), 6-1, 7-5. It was the Pole’s fifth consecutive defeat in the second round, and he has never advanced beyond that stage at the US Open.
Carlos Alcaraz
Botik van de Zandschulp is currently the main sensation of the US Open. He beat Carlos Alcaraz 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Spaniard has won the last two major tournaments and won his first US Open title two years ago.
However, van de Zandschulp fought for every ball, served incredibly well and raised his level as Alcaraz looked set to come back into the match. This is Alcaraz’s first exit from a Grand Slam tournament since his second-round loss at Wimbledon in 2021. It is also the first time he has exited the US Open before the quarter-finals. The defeat will likely end his ambition of finishing the season as world number one, unless Jannik Sinner also crashes out early.
