Russian tennis player Daniel Medvedev considers the widely-received statements and interviews as part of his legacy, just like his sporting achievements.
Medvedev will face Flavio Cobolli of Italy on Saturday in the third round of this season’s US Open. At the 2019 tournament, after beating Feliciano Lopez of Spain, the Russian, in an on-court interview, told the crowd who did not support him during the match: “I want you all to know when you go to bed that I won because of you.”
“Maybe winning this match is one of the brightest moments of my career.” And the interview is always nice to watch. I remember, I think, in Davis Cup 2021, Alexander Bublik won one of his matches, and I think there was some tension between him and the audience. And in the interview he said, “I won because of you,” and so on. And it was very funny, so even when other players quote you, it’s something special.
I am always in the headlines, sometimes bad, sometimes good, sometimes funny, sometimes not so funny. And I don’t really like headlines, but when I am on the court, my mind is constantly racing – sometimes with disappointment, sometimes with positive emotions. It happens even if I don’t want it to. I think it’s good. I will end my career. I will have a good legacy of titles and good memories on the court, and probably iconic moments like being on the microphone, etc. “I like to say that I have no problem with it,” Medvedev said at a press conference.
