He turned things around by eliminating Dusan Lajovic and Fabian Marozan in the first two rounds before eliminating Flavio Cobolli in the third. Medvedev beat the Italian 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.
Nuno Borges, meanwhile, had a solid season with 24 wins in 45 matches, including the 2024 Swedish Open title, where he beat Rafael Nadal in the final. He also reached the quarterfinals in Los Cabos and Estoril, where he lost to Casper Ruud and Cristian Garin respectively.
Borjes arrived in New York on a wave of early flights from Cincinnati and Winston-Salem. He opened the U.S. Open by easily eliminating Federico Coria and Thanasi Kokkinakis in the first two rounds before beating Jakub Mensik in the third. Borzes beat the Czech in a five-set match with a score of 6-7 (5), 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-0.
Medvedev leads the head-to-head confrontations with Borzes with a score of 2-0. He last beat the Portuguese at the 2024 Halle Open.
