Gilles Cervara, tennis coach Daniel Medvedev believes that the Russian’s playing style can be compared to the works of Salvador Dali.
After the Paris Olympics, Medvedev played in two Masters Series tournaments, but lost in the opening matches in Toronto and Cincinnati. On Wednesday, the 28-year-old Russian will face Italian world number one Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals of the US Open.
– The first day [по прибытии на US Open] I felt that Daniil did not like his tennis, he complained. We had to try something else. We decided to start from the basics, with our “terrible game” – that’s the code name between us. We managed to gain a foothold, thanks to which we were able to increase our momentum, minute by minute, shot by shot.
Even the rest of the team thought it was weird that he wasn’t hitting the ball enough. I told them not to worry because Daniel knew exactly what he was doing. They just had to give him time to get bigger. He’s smart and he can play tennis. The rest will come gradually. He should have felt good. He was happy with himself, and when he is, you see the best of what he can do.
“If I compared Daniel to a painter, you would expect him to draw a straight line. But this is not Medvedev. He makes curved lines, and it looks like it’s nothing, like Salvador Dali,” Cervara said, as quoted by L’Equipe.
