The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) are close to concluding a corporate merger agreement and could finalize the merger in the first half of 2025, Front Office Sport reports, citing an ATP source.
The merger will create a Tennis Ventures division. The merger will combine media, tour sponsorships and data, but will not affect the schedule, player-tournament relationships or prize money.
It is worth noting that the revenues will go mainly to men, which is due to the imbalance in revenues of the ATP and WTA.
“The ATP makes four times more than the WTA, so that’s the 80/20 starting point. And then the plan is to continue to split that revenue the same way until we exceed the projections that all the groups are making right now. In the short term, it’s a bad deal for the WTA, but I think by accepting it and focusing on the long term, the WTA will win,” a source was quoted as saying by Front Office Sport.
The next step will be board meetings at the ATP and WTA Finals in Turin and Riyadh respectively. If the tours go ahead, key questions will need to be answered, such as the management of Tennis Ventures. A source close to the ATP said that if a deal is reached, it would happen early to mid-next year.
