Ludmila wins second Grand Slam title of her career
Ukrainian Ludmila Kichenok And Elena Ostapenko from Latvia became the winners US Open Women’s Doubles 2024.
In the final, Kichenok and Ostapenko, seeded seventh, faced Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic and Zhang Shuai from China. The tennis players spent almost an hour and a half on the court.
In the first set, Ludmila and Elena took a 4:1 lead with a break, but allowed Mladenovic and Shuai to fight back. In the ninth game, the Ukrainian and her partner saved five break points, and in the tenth, they successfully played on their opponents’ serve and won (6:4).
In the second set, Kichenok and Ostapenko were losing 1:3, but returned to the game. Lyudmila and Elena made two breaks and with the fourth match point they achieved the final victory – 6:3.
This is the first joint Grand Slam title for Kichenok and Ostapenko. Recall that in 2024, they won doubles tournaments in Brisbane and Eastbourne, and also reached the final of the Australian Open, where they lost to Xie Shuwei and Elise Mertens.
Lyudmyla became the first Ukrainian to win two Grand Slam titles. In 2023, she became the Wimbledon mixed doubles champion along with Croatian Mate Pavic.
Thanks to her successful performance at the 2024 US Open, Lyudmyla Kichenok will set a new national record in the WTA doubles ranking. In the new ranking, which will be published on September 9, the Ukrainian will take fifth place.
