Belarusian world number two Arina Sabalenko said she was very proud to have won the US Open because it was a way to honor her father’s memory.
Sabalenka beats American in US Open final Jessica Pegula with a score of 7:5, 7:5. The tennis player’s father died in 2019 at the age of 43.
“After losing my father, my goal was to write our family’s name in tennis history. When I see my name on the trophy, I am proud of my family for not giving up on my dream.
I think I’ve become really strong psychologically. I’ve been through a lot on and off the court, and I’ve learned to control my emotions and maintain my peace of mind on the court. Even when things aren’t going my way, I keep reminding myself, “It’s just a tennis match. You can handle these emotions. You just have to focus on what you have to do to win.”
“I’m happy. I remember all the tough losses here at the US Open. I had to go through tough lessons to win this beautiful trophy. I think now I’m the happiest person in the world,” Sabalenka said after the match, her words at the press conference are quoted by The Tennis Letter.
Sabalenka won her third Grand Slam title after winning the Australian Open in 2023 and 2024. At last year’s US Open, the Belarusian reached the final, where she lost to American Cori Gauff.
