On Wednesday, August 10, at the Montreal Masters (Canadian Open) the matches of the second round took place, where three Russians fought their way. One of our tennis players – Karen Khachanov – will fight with the 16th racket in the world – Croatian Marin Cilic. The winner of this fight will face either Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz or American Tommy Paul.
Between them, tennis players will play the fifth duel at a professional level. According to the results of the previous four parity was fixed – 2:2. Moreover, Khachanov won the last two meetings with Cilic, which took place at the start of the current season. In January, the tennis players faced each other in a tournament in Adelaide, Australia (semi-final). Then Karen had enough to win two sets – 7:6, 6:3. A month and a half later, Cilic lost to Khachanov in Doha. This time the rivals met in the quarter-finals and the Russian celebrated his victory in three sets – 3:6, 6:3, 6:4.
Cilic has two victories to his credit, which the Croatian won in 2018 and 2021. Marina’s first success against a Russian came at the Masters in Cincinnati, USA. And the second – at the St. Petersburg tournament. Either way, Cilic needed three sets to win. Simply put, Khachanov has won at least one game against the Croatian in every game.
As for the current tournament in Montreal, the tennis players played the matches of the first round in different ways. Thus, Marin Cilic quite easily defeated his compatriot Borna Coric in straight sets – 6:3, 6:2. But Karen Khachanov had a tough fight against Argentinian Francisco Serundolo, in which he won only in the third set – 7:6, 5:7, 6:3.
