Former Russian world number one Maria nominated for inclusion in International Tennis Hall of Fame Sharapova won based on fan voting.
In early September, the 37-year-old athlete was among the candidates for enrollment in the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Along with her, Americans Bob and Mike Bryan, as well as Canadian Daniel Nestor, were nominated. As reported on the official website of the Hall of Fame, thanks to the votes of fans, Sharapova will receive three additional percentage points to the total number of votes, Bob and Mike Bryan – two, Nestor – one.
“I am incredibly grateful to the fans around the world who supported me in the International Tennis Hall of Fame fan vote.” “Being nominated for inclusion in the Hall of Fame is a huge honor, and the support of the fans makes it even more special,” Sharapova was quoted as saying by the official website of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
The fan vote is one of two steps in determining a new Hall of Famer. The second step will involve a vote among tennis journalists, historians and Hall of Fame members.
Sharapova could become the third Russian representative in the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Previously, Marat Safin and Yevgeny Kafelnikov received this honor.
Sharapova is a former world number one and winner of five Grand Slam tournaments and 36 WTA singles tournaments. She announced her retirement from sport in February 2020.
