Svitolina: I had surgery on my leg to fix a long-standing problem that I’ve been trying to deal with all year

Elina will return to the court next year

Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina reported that she had successfully undergone surgery on her leg and announced her return to the court in 2025.

“I had surgery on my foot to correct a long-standing issue that I’ve been struggling with all year. It’s the same issue that ended my season early in 2023 and has been hampering me for much of 2024. It’s become more difficult to manage and it’s impacting me more and more, not just in my tennis and training, but in my everyday life.”

“But for now… I am excited to focus on my recovery and try to come back stronger than ever. I am committed to doing everything I can to get back on court and perform at the highest level. I want to thank you all for your support during this difficult time. Your love and positivity means the world to me and I look forward to seeing you all on the courts in 2025. Much love, Elina.”

Svitolina did not win a single title in 2024. In total, she played 48 matches, winning 30. She reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, and finished in the fourth round (1/8 finals) at two more majors (Australian Open and Roland Garros).

Elina also reached the 1/8 finals stage at the recent 2024 Olympics tennis tournament in Paris, losing in three sets to Czech Barbora Krejcikova. Svitolina’s last tournament was the 2024 US Open. She was eliminated in the third round, after losing in a three-set match to the 2023 tournament champion, American Coco Gauff.

In June, Elina lost her status as Ukraine’s No. 1 for the first time in a long time — Marta Kostyuk overtook her in the rankings. Svitolina, who turned 30 on September 12, ends the season at No. 28 in the WTA rankings.
