Italian tennis player Jannik sinner described as disappointing the decision of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to ask the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for its disqualification for violating anti-doping rules.
On Saturday, WADA announced that it had appealed the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s (ITIA) decision regarding Sinner’s doping case to the CAS. The ITIA announced in August that the 23-year-old Italian had tested positive in two doping tests in March. He avoided disqualification because he proved that the banned substance, clostebol, entered his body by accident. WADA demands that the world number one be suspended for one to two years.
“We can’t control everything, can we?” Obviously, I am very disappointed and surprised by the appeal because we have had three hearings. And the three auditions were very positive for me.
I knew a few days ago that WADA was going to appeal and that today it would be officially known. But yes, it’s a surprise. Maybe they just want to make sure everything was done correctly,” Sinner said at a news conference.
Sinner beat Russian Roman Safiullin in three sets on Saturday to reach the quarter-finals of the Beijing tournament.
