Sports lawyer Anna Antseliovich told that the tennis player Jannik sinner can avoid disqualification if he can prove to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) that the prohibited substance entered his body through contact with the hands of a massage therapist.
In August, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced that world number one Sinner had returned two positive doping tests in March. The athlete avoided disqualification because he proved that the banned substance, clostebol, entered his body by accident. On Saturday, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) announced that it had filed an appeal in Sinner’s case with the CAS on September 26.
— Without the elements of the file, it is difficult to talk about the conditions of disqualification. It was understood that WADA would appeal the ITIA’s decision not to suspend Sinner. The CAS will now resolve the issue, and much will depend on the arbitrators chosen by the parties and the president of the hearing. It is still too early to make predictions. It all depends on whether Sinner can prove this was an unintentional technique. If the substance actually entered the body through the hands of a massage therapist, then Yannick can avoid suspension,” Antseliovich told .
Sinner is the winner of the Australian Open and the US Open. Since June, the 23-year-old tennis player has been at the top of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings.
