Russian Irina Khromacheva said on social media that the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) is disrespecting doubles athletes.
On September 27, Khromacheva, partnered with Anna Danilina of Kazakhstan, lost to Czech Karolina Muchova and Spaniard Paula Badosa in the first round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing in doubles. Muchova and Badosa subsequently withdrew from the second round match, but continue to participate in singles competitions. Their second-round rivals, Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova and Taiwan’s Zhang Haoqing, advanced to the quarterfinals without a fight.
— Well done, WTA. We lost to the singles team in the doubles match at the Beijing tournament. And they bowed out of the second round because they didn’t care about doubles, but they’re still playing singles this week. It is utter madness to take the place of athletes who could step into the nets and play doubles fully.
I encountered this situation twice this year: a few first round wins, then withdrawals. No respect for doubles players. And also to the people who are trying to participate in the tournament. Very nice rule. In addition, the tournament loses a scheduled match. Respect on the WTA tour – no, I have not heard of its existence,” Khromacheva wrote.
Khromacheva is 29 years old and ranks 28th in the WTA doubles rankings. She has seven titles at tournaments under the auspices of the doubles organization, of which she has won five this season.
