Federer to Nadal: I always hoped this day would never come

The legendary rivalry between the Swiss and the Spaniard lasted 15 years and included 40 head-to-head meetings

Famous former tennis player Roger Federer sent an emotional message to his colleague, another tennis legend Rafael Nadalwho today announced his retirement at the end of the season.

“What a career, Rafa! I always hoped that this day would never come. Thank you for the unforgettable memories and all your incredible achievements in your favorite game. It was a huge honor for me.”

Let us remind you that 38-year-old Nadal officially said goodbye to the game, to which he devoted more than 20 years only at the professional level. The final event of the Davis Cup for 8 teams, which will be played from November 19 to 24 in Malaga, will mark the end of the Spaniard’s eventful and glorious career.

Federer and Nadal were the main stars of men’s world tennis in the first two decades of this century. Their rivalry included 40 head-to-head meetings between 2004 and 2019, of which 24 came in the finals of various tournaments (including nine major finals and one at the ATP Finals).

The total score of duels won is 24:16 in favor of Rafael. The Spaniard was much more often stronger than the Swiss at Grand Slam tournaments (10:4), but Federer took revenge at the Final Tournaments – four matches won against one, including the victorious 2010 final.
