Former Russian world number one Maria Sharapova said that even during her playing career, she realized how prestigious it was to be a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
On Thursday, it was announced that Sharapova would be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
“For the first time, I understood the full prestige of the Hall of Fame after my first victory at the Grand Slam tournament. Next, the Hall of Fame representative asked me to select a game outfit to display in the museum. Then my reaction was, “Oh my God! Wow!” These are the little moments of joy that follow a big victory. I remember them clearly.
After you retire, you rarely have a chance to reflect on your past because you move forward very quickly with life’s responsibilities. This is incredible recognition. Thank you so much. “I am very grateful to the Hall of Fame and the people who voted for me,” Sharapova said on the International Tennis Hall of Fame YouTube channel.
Sharapova will become the third Russian representative to the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Previously, Marat Safin and Yevgeny Kafelnikov received this honor.
Sharapova is a former world number one and winner of five Grand Slams and 36 WTA singles tournaments. She announced her retirement from her sporting career in February 2020.
