“Now I have to pay 20,000.” During the match, Rublev argued with the referee, who fined him for swearing.

Russian tennis player Andrei Rublev was fined one point during the quarterfinal match of the ATP 500 tournament in Basel, Switzerland, against American Ben Shelton.

The American representative won the first match with a score of 7:5, the Russian won the second set in the tiebreak – 7:6 (7:3).

As the match progressed, Rublev was penalized a point: he was first warned for hitting a napkin drawer, then cursed in Spanish after a mistake on a shot. According to the rules, receiving a second warning during a match results in a point being awarded in favor of the opponent.

Rublev tried to explain to the referee that his reaction was directed at himself and not at the spectators or other participants in the match.

– Tell me, when you experience a tense situation, how can you not react to it? You’re stuck in a traffic jam, some idiot cuts you off and you say, “Oh, go ahead, you’re a great guy”? Is this a different situation? And now I have to pay a fine of 20,000,” said Rublev, the tournament’s number one seed.
