The vice-president of the Russian Tennis Federation, Alexei Selivanenko, believes that the former first racket in the world Maria Sharapova deserved to be a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
On Thursday, it was learned that the Russian and the Americans Bob and Mike Bryan would be enshrined in the Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place in the United States in August 2025.
“It seems to me that this is an absolutely objective decision. It must be understood that the International Tennis Hall of Fame is a ceremonial and honorable thing, one of the most honorable in tennis. Just look at the list of these already nominated legends. This event reflects Maria’s role in the history of world tennis and is universally recognized. This is not some kind of competition, but an objective recognition of merit,” Selivanenko told Soviet Sport.
Sharapova is a former world number one, winner of five Grand Slam tournaments and 36 WTA singles tournaments. She announced her retirement from her sporting career in February 2020.
