“I don’t have confidence, but I will try to develop it” – tennis player Medvedev about the final ATP tournament

Russia’s first racket Daniel Medvedev said he does not feel confident ahead of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) final tournament, but will try to work on it, including in training.

On Wednesday, Medvedev lost to Australian Alexei Popyrin in the second round of the Masters in Paris – 4:6, 6:2, 6:7 (4:7). The final ATP tournament with the participation of the eight best tennis players at the end of the season will be held from November 10 to 17 in Turin. Medvedev won these competitions in 2020.

— What do you think of the speed of the court during the Paris tournament?

– I think everything is fine in court. I have a more serious problem. Some players benefit, others lose. This is normal, but for me it is a big inconvenience. The first rounds are always very difficult for me, because matches that I would have won before, I can no longer win them. I have to fight in every match. This is reality. I guess this is the biggest first round exit for me since 2018 or even earlier on hard courts. And there’s a reason for that.

– What do you think is the reason?

— On the one hand, I wouldn’t complain if I lost in the first match, but I was in the semifinals in Beijing and the quarterfinals in Shanghai, losing only to Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. There too, I complained, even while winning matches. Like I said, some players like the new balls. I complain because these bullets put me at a disadvantage. But if you take six new balls out of the pot, you will realize that they are six different balls. I don’t think it should be like that.

— You haven’t won the same tournament twice. Do you find it funny or stressful?

– It’s quite funny. No pressure. Just a funny statistic that I want to change. I’m already 28, next year I’ll be 29. I want to change, but it hasn’t worked out yet. I’ll try again. Maybe I should play until I’m 50, where I’ve already won.

— You have already won the Final Tournament…

– Do you think I can do this twice?

– What is more important: sport or mental state?

– All. Tennis is also important. Trust. I’ll get there, I don’t have confidence, but I’ll try to develop it, train it, I have time to train. I don’t know what is more important because you are playing against strong opponents. If psychologically, like today, you lose 7-6 in the third set, physically – well, physically I didn’t feel so bad – physically you should be good,” Medvedev said at a press conference.
