Russian tennis player Daria Kasatkina criticized the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) for the new rules for access to the final tournament.
According to the new rule, an athlete who wins one of the Grand Slam tournaments, but finishes outside the top 8 in the championship race (but not below 20th place), automatically receives a place in the final tournament.
Thus, this year, the winner of Wimbledon, the Czech Barbora Krejcikova, qualified for the tournament in Riyadh. Kasatkina took ninth place in the race, while the Russian played a match at the final tournament after the withdrawal of American Jessica Pegula, but the result of Kasatkina’s match against Polish Iga Szwiatek had no meaning for the tournament.
— In my opinion, the championship race is the champion race. It all depends on how many points you earn throughout the year. If you win a Grand Slam, you already have points, money, glory, everything.
We are talking about the WTA race here. Therefore, I think that in this situation everything should go by points,” Kasatkina said, as quoted by Tennis 365.
