American Corey Gauff became the youngest winner of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) finals since 2004.
On Saturday, the 20-year-old Gauff beat the 22-year-old Olympic champion. Zheng Qingwen of China in the final of the final tournament in Riyadh – 3:6, 6:4, 7:6 (7:2).
The decisive match of the competition was the youngest in terms of total age of the finalists since the 2004 tournament. Then in the final the 17-year-old Russian Maria Sharapova defeated 23-year-old American Serena Williams with a score of 4:6, 6:2, 6:4. Gauff also became the youngest champion in the final since Sharapova’s victory.
