“No hysteria. I was just blocking out the noise” – Medvedev explained his action after beating De Minaur

Russian tennis player Daniel Medvedev said his celebration after beating Australian Alex De Minaur at the ATP Finals in Turin was due to a desire to maintain good spirits.

On Tuesday, Medvedev earned his first victory of the tournament, defeating De Minaur with a score of 6:2, 6:4. At the end of the match, the Russian closed his eyes and ears and then wrote “Block out the noise” on the camera lens. Previously, Medvedev lost to American Taylor Fritz at the start of the tournament (4:6, 3:6). During this match, he threw and dropped his racket several times, and also held it with the handle forward during his opponent’s serve.

— The last match was not very good in many respects. I decided I would go to this game without worrying about it, in a good way. What happens will happen. Anyway, the season is ending, if I win today I’ll have my chance on Thursday, if not, well, what can I do… I tried to maintain this feeling until at the end. Because when you have an advantage in a match, you say to yourself: oh, I can win. But today I said to myself: no, it doesn’t matter, go ahead and try to play your game. And I managed to finish the job. I am happy with my level. I will try to do the same in the next match. So I don’t care.

— Tell us about your celebration at the end of the match.

“It seems to me that a lot of footballers do that. If I understand correctly, it has more to do with social networks. After my “performance” in the match with Taylor and some of my comments, I tried to use social media less. I went to the game today blocking out the noise. No hysteria. I just blocked out the noise. I didn’t care what happened on set. I was just trying to play. It was a good feeling. I’m used to celebrating when I win tournaments, but today I didn’t care.

— Did you feel that this noise bothered you?

– No, I don’t think so. It’s just good to do it yourself sometimes to remind yourself that sometimes you have to do it. The more popular you become, the more fans and haters you have. The more attention you receive. Sometimes even a good noise can throw you off balance. You win everything and people say you’re a god. You lose two games and people say, ‘Your career is over.’ Sometimes it’s better to just block it,” Medvedev said in an on-court interview after the match.

In the final match of the group stage, Medvedev will face world number one, Italian Jannik Sinner.
