After the first day of the match between Ukraine and Austria in the playoffs of the Billie Jean King Cup, the score is equal
Women’s captain Ukrainian national tennis team Ilya Marchenko commented on the outcome of the first day of confrontation with Austria in the playoffs Billie Jean King Cup.
“Not everything worked out at the beginning of Tsurenko’s game, but overall, in the first set, Lesya’s level was enough to control the match. In the second, Pashek made a little less mistakes. Lesya really played more passively than I would have liked. When Tsurenko started hitting more high balls in the second set at 2:5, it was entirely her idea and it worked.”
“Katya played better today than she played here in training, and at the tournaments where she played in the last few weeks. Literally a couple of points were missing at the end of the decisive set. Of course we knew that it would be difficult against Kraus. Today she made fewer mistakes than we would like.”
“Did our rivals manage to surprise us with anything? Perhaps we were counting on an easier match against Pashki. But in general, it’s a sin to complain, because after all, we took a point in that match.”
“Perhaps there will be replacements. In the morning we will assess the physical condition of Lesya and Katya and then we will make a final decision.”
“It’s really hard to be the captain of the national team. I gave a lot of emotions, especially in the second match. I’m not completely happy with my job today. Somewhere it probably could have been better, chosen different words or something. Not everything went perfectly.”
Lesya Tsurenko beat Tamira Pashek in two sets and brought the first point for the Ukrainian team. In the second match, Katarina Zawatskaya lost to Sinja Kraus in three sets. The score after the first day of the confrontation is equal – 1:1.
On Sunday, November 17, two more singles matches are planned, where the opponents will switch places: Tsurenko – Kraus and Zavacka – Pashek. If a fifth match is needed to determine the winning team, then in doubles Ukraine will be represented by Nadezhda Kichenok and Anastasia Soboleva, and Austria will be represented by the same Pashek and Kraus.
The winner of the Ukraine-Austria meeting will receive the right to compete in the qualification of the world finals in 2025.
