Spanish world number three Carlos Alcaraz declared that Rafael Nadal has always been a role model for him.
Alcaraz and Nadal played for Spain in the Davis Cup quarterfinals against the Netherlands on Tuesday. The confrontation ended with a score of 2-1 in favor of the Netherlands. Nadal lost to Botik van de Zandshulp in his match (4:6, 4:6). Earlier, the 38-year-old had said that the current Davis Cup would be his last tournament of his career.
“If in my career I achieve at least half of what Rafa did, I will be immensely happy.”
I always dreamed of becoming world number one and winning Grand Slam tournaments. This is largely thanks to Rafa.
When he gave his farewell speech, I remembered how small I was and saw him win with such passion, with such joy… And I thought that one day, I would be like that too,” Alcaraz, 21, said at a press conference.
Alcaraz and Nadal were paired at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The Spanish duo reached the quarter-finals of the tournament.
