“Nadal did not leave tennis, but simply refocused his activities” – Kamelzon

Russia’s Honored Coach Vladimir Kamelzon called retired Rafael Nadal one of the best tennis players of the time and also spoke positively about his academy.

The 38-year-old Spaniard lost his Davis Cup quarter-final singles match against Botik van de Zandschulp on Tuesday evening, as Spain finished the tournament by losing to the Netherlands. After the defeat, Rafael admitted that he felt in advance that it was the last match of his career.

— I consider Nadal one of the best tennis players of the time, along with Federer and Djokovic. In terms of fame and results, these guys are equal. Therefore, for me, these three elements are of the utmost importance. Back when they kept the bar high, I directed every athlete I worked with to them.

The only thing nature cannot do is shorten the years; it only increases them. And over the years, of course, the human body cannot withstand heavy loads. And the charges that exist in modern tennis are very high. Sinner and company, the guys who are playing now, do it at different speeds.

I think Nadal has not left tennis, we will see him again. He created a good academy. Our guys have already gone to his place to train, and there are already results. So it’s not an abandonment of tennis, but simply a reorientation of activities,” Kamelzon was quoted as saying by Soviet Sport.

During his tennis career, the Spaniard topped the ATP rankings for a total of 209 weeks. In total, Nadal has won 92 singles titles; his last victory on the tour was at Roland Garros 2022. In total, he has won the French Open 14 times, a record for a single player in a Grand Slam tournament.
