“This is a final and irrevocable decision.” Tennis player Vesnina explained why she retired

Olympic tennis champion Elena Vesnina told that this time the decision to end her professional career is final.

Vesnine is 38 years old. In 2018, the athlete took a break due to the birth of a child; In 2021, she returned to the field and won silver at the Tokyo Olympics in mixed doubles. In May 2023, Vesnina gave birth to her second child and then announced her return to tennis. This summer, she participated in the Paris Games in doubles. After losing in the first round, the athlete announced that she would retire after the 2024 season.

“The time came and I realized I was mentally ready to make this decision. Tennis is a great sport, but it’s time to move on. I have a lot of projects in my life, my priorities have changed. I made the decision and I did it with ease.

— Did injuries and health issues influence this decision?

— Of course, health problems affected. I can now devote myself fully to my family and my children. The construction of our tennis academy in Sochi will begin soon, I have devoted a lot of effort to it. I dream of it becoming complete and modern. I will also work on television. Tennis has given me an incredible career, memories and friends. I am incredibly grateful to everyone who accompanied me along this path: parents, husband, coaches, school teachers who gave me the opportunity to skip classes and take subjects later. I didn’t think I could achieve such results when I first appeared on the field at the age of six. It’s a difficult decision for an athlete.

I wanted to delay the announcement of my departure a little because everyone was talking about Raf! I didn’t want to cross paths, because Nadal is a legend. I wanted to do it calmly a week later, as I had planned before.

— You have already finished your career and returned after giving birth. Is the decision now final or do you think you can resume performances?

“This is a final and irrevocable decision,” Vesnina told .

Vesnina won doubles gold at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics with Ekaterina Makarova. She is the winner of Roland Garros, the US Open, Wimbledon and the WTA final tournament in pairs, as well as the Australian Open in mixed doubles.
