Russian tennis player Sizikova still struggles to remember her detention by French police in 2021

Russian tennis player Yana Sizikova admitted it was still difficult for her to talk about being detained by French police for match-fixing in mid-2021.

In October 2020, French prosecutors opened an investigation into a suspicious match involving Sizikova at Roland Garros. Sizikova was suspected of fraud and was arrested on June 3, 2021 in Paris during the next French Open, but a day later she was released at the police station without charge.

– There were a lot of thoughts. Again, I had nothing to say to them, because what should I be afraid of? On the contrary, it was fear for the whole general situation: to think that they could kidnap me – no, there was no such thing. Just for nothing.

Thanks to the family, it went faster than expected. But even today, it is very difficult for me to talk about it. It took me over six months to stop thinking about everything. To be honest, I even get tense when there are a lot of foreigners around the pitch – I don’t feel very comfortable. It takes time, it’s a defensive reaction,” Sizikova told the “Championship”.

Sizikova, 27, is a doubles specialist. She has two WTA titles and 44 ITF trophies. In singles, Yana won three ITF tournaments.
