Given the circumstances, Iga’s degree of guilt was found to be the lowest
Polish tennis player, world number two Iga Šwiętek agreed with 1 month disqualification as part of the Anti-Doping Tennis Program from International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).
On August 12, the 23-year-old athlete took a doping test, which showed a positive result for the banned substance trimetazidine (TMZ).
An investigation revealed that the source was contaminated with the approved over-the-counter drug melatonin, which Iga was taking to better acclimatize to jet lag and to combat sleep disturbances. Taking all the circumstances into account, the ITIA found Schwiatek’s level of culpability to be the lowest (“No significant fault or negligence”) and imposed a minimum period of ineligibility of one month.
The sanction came into effect on September 12. After 10 days, the tennis player filed an appeal, and the period of disqualification was suspended. During her suspension, Schwiatek managed to miss three tournaments – one in South Korea and two in China (both WTA 1000 series). On October 4, the appeal of the suspension was granted, and the tennis player returned to competition.
Yesterday, November 27, Schwiatek gave her official consent to serve the imposed disqualification. At the same time, those days that the Pole missed during the period of temporary suspension are counted towards her term. This leaves Iga to serve out the remainder of his ban, which will end on December 4th.
Let us remind you that in early November, Szwiatek took part in the WTA Final Tournament, but, despite two victories in the group, she was unable to reach the semi-finals. In the middle of the month, Iga, as part of the Polish national team, reached the semi-finals of the Billie Jean King Cup. Her team consistently beat Spain and the Czech Republic, but in the fight for the finals they lost to the future champion, the Italian team.
The Polish tennis player ends the year in second position in the world rankings, but at the same time, Szwiatek became only the fifth tennis player in history to become the season leader in the number of titles won for three years in a row (five in 2024).
