Tennis player Denis Shapovalov, winner of the Davis Cup as part of the Canadian national team, expressed the opinion that the existing anti-doping rules are unfair.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced on Thursday that world number two Iga Swiatek of Poland tested positive for the banned substance trimetazidine in August. As a result, it was decided that there was no significant misconduct or negligence on the part of the athlete and she was suspended for one month.
— A month’s ban, well, yes. It’s unfair that Simona Halep and others have received incredibly long bans for things like this. I am happy that the situation is changing because the anti-doping rules are unfair. But guys like Imer are still serving their sentences and have never even had positive doping tests,” Shapovalov wrote on his social networks.
Former Romanian world number one Simona Halep was suspended from competition in October 2022. In September 2023, the ITIA made the decision to disqualify the athlete. In March 2024, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) reduced the duration of suspension to nine months. From the provisional suspension until the CAS decision, Halep was unable to compete.
Previously, Swedish tennis player Mikael Ymer was disqualified for three months for missing three doping tests in one year.
