Director General of the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), Karen Moorhouse, explained why the Polish tennis player, former world number one Iga Swiętek was suspended for just one month for anti-doping rule violations.
A sample taken in August 2024 contained minimal levels of trimetazidine, a banned substance. The athlete was able to prove that the doping had entered his body unintentionally.
“Once the source of trimetazidine in the body was established, it became clear that this was a very unusual case of infection with a medicine regulated in Poland.
However, a product does not have the same designation globally, and the fact that a product is a regulated medicine in one country may not in itself be sufficient to avoid liability.
This case is an important reminder to tennis players about strict liability and the importance of players carefully considering the use of supplements and medications. It is essential that appropriate testing is carried out to minimize the risk of unintentional anti-doping rule violations like this,” Moorhouse said according to the ITIA press service.
Šwiętek’s period of ineligibility will end on December 4, 2024.
