Fernando Vicente, coach of the Russian world number eight Andrei Rublev spoke about his first emotions after meeting the tennis player.
— You have worked with Andrey for nine years. What was it like when you started? And how is he now?
– Phew, what a question. Living side by side with this guy for almost 10 years is not an easy thing (laughs). I remember how Andrei arrived in Barcelona at a very young age with his mother. Then I trained Granollers. And they told me there was a Russian who wanted to work with me. I said, “Damn, I don’t even know.” But within two weeks, Rublev convinced me. Day after day he showed me what he wanted, I saw a crazy player who could make 10 good shots but be upset by one bad one. I decided it was worth a try, it was worth trying to improve this guy’s game.
Of course, an important factor is that we have a great relationship. Andrey respects me enormously and I respect him. Without it, work is impossible. That’s why we’re still together. Off the field, Andrei is a completely different person. People who barely know him think he’s crazy. But he is not like that, Rublev is a wonderful person, very kind and sympathetic. He loves to compete too much. And of course, time passed very quickly. You just said nine years have passed, but I can’t believe it. From the very beginning of our work, Andrei indicated that he wanted to become the world’s first racket. Then I thought, “This guy is crazy. There are so many things we need to improve! He was very thin, very shy,” Vicente said as quoted by “Championship”.
Rublev is the winner of 16 ATP singles tournaments.
