Fernando Vicente, coach of world number eight Andrei Rublev explained why the Russian cannot reach the semi-finals of Grand Slam tournaments.
Rublev is 27 years old and ranked eighth in the world rankings. The athlete has 16 ATP titles, Olympic gold in mixed doubles and a Davis Cup victory.
— What does it take for Andrei to finally cross the Grand Slam quarter-final barrier?
— We must continue to reach the quarterfinals first. But I will say this: before, when he reached the quarter-finals, the level of his game and his body was objectively not enough to fight for the semi-finals. Of all his quarterfinals, only two missed the real opportunity: the matches in 2022 with Cilic at Roland Garros and with Tiafoe at the US Open. Here he really made a big mistake. In all other cases, the level of opponents was higher – Nadal, Djokovic, Medvedev. The goal is to reach the quarter-finals again, to be ready, to improve the level and finally to reach the semi-finals.
I really ask Andrey to enjoy tennis more during the season, to be mentally healthy, to believe that he can really win a Grand Slam. This is the path we can take. If it works, cool. Otherwise, Andrey still needs to remember that he should enjoy life, not suffer at every tournament and not worry as much as if it were a matter of life and death. Of course, we do all this hard work to win, but the mental strength is to accept defeat, not to put unnecessary pressure on yourself, and to try to fight with good humor, and not suffer mentally. If we succeed, then everything will be much better,” Vicente said as quoted by “Championship”.
