Nadal points to US Open after early farewell in Cincinnati: ‘I have to activate Grand Slam mode’

Rafa analyzed his elimination in Ohio, after his defeat against Croatian Borna Coric, in what was his return to action 42 days after the abdominal injury which took him out of the last Wimbledon and from which he put it back again. In any case, he does not lose hope of making a good presentation in the United States, if his physique allows it.

Rafael Nadal wants to compete big again, waiting for his physique to allow it. The Spanish tennis player is betting to turn the page on his recent and early elimination from the Cincinnati Masters 1000 with a new crown. Of those he likes: those of the Grand Slam. The Fiera aims to bring what was an opaque presentation into oblivion by finding its best level in the United States, in the fourth and last major of the season in the discipline.

The Manacor-born man performed poorly in Ohio, saying goodbye to the tournament in the second round, after losing to Croatian Borna Coric 6-7, 6-4, 3-6. His performance was obviously affected by the abdominal injury he suffered in the past at Wimbledon, which forced him to withdraw from the semi-finals and from which he is still recovering. In any case, Nadal wanted to have action before what will be the US Open, a tournament in which he does not lose hope of putting on a good performance.

Once the match was over in which the European returned to play after 42 days without tennis, he analyzed how his performance was in Cincinnati, lamenting weeks which, without a doubt, have affected him both sportingly and emotionally.

“I didn’t play my best game. It’s something that can happen after a while without competition and has historically happened to me in this tournament” Nadal first said after his loss to Coric, in a match in which discomfort in his abdomen was noticed at times, despite his efforts to keep it from affecting him while on the pitch.

“It is difficult to take positive things from such a defeat, even if I know this way. I have to improve, I have to train hard, but the priority for me is to stay healthy. The last month and a half has not been easy at all. completed the Fiera, in the same spirit.

Regarding the injury for which he is still under treatment, the Gladiator assured that it did not allow him to show his best version and that it even caused him more harm: “The scar makes me a bit more conservative and more erratic in important moments of the match. The tear in the abdomen affects you a lot when it comes to serving”.

“There is a very fine line between feeling the typical discomfort, nothing to worry about, which involves having a scar in the muscle or establishing if this pain is happening because something is wrong” Nadal added.

Rafa, yes, has warned that tests will be carried out after his brief presentation in Ohio. This, in order to verify that he has no major difficulties in the face of what will be the US Open. He knows he doesn’t have much time left before the start of this tournament, so he needs to focus fully on his preparation.

“I’m going to run some tests to make sure there are no issues. I have a week and a half left to get to Flushing Meadows and I need to activate Grand Slam mode now” finished the Spaniard, who will seek his fourth crown in the United States, after those obtained in 2010, 2013, 2017 and 2019.
