Medvedev: ‘Coming back to the US Open as a champion will be something special’

The first racket in the Russian world Daniel Medvedev said that he had special feelings before participating in the US Open, the athlete also spoke of emotions after winning the first title at the Grand Slam tournaments.

In 2021, Medvedev won the US Open, beating Serbian Novak Djokovic in the final.

– Returning to New York, of course, brings only good memories. I’ve always loved playing the US Open. I feel good here and I show a quality game, with the exception perhaps of the first years of my career. After winning last year, coming back as champions will be something special.

Was it difficult to “digest” the title? I do not think so. I’m glad I was able to achieve this. This is an important step in the life of any player. We can always discuss what is more important: the ATP Finals, the Davis Cup, the Masters, etc. But the Grand Slam tournament is above all. I achieved that by beating a man like Novak in the final. When I look back I think: ‘It’s good that I was able to do it’, in the future it will help me to be successful again,” Medvedev quotes.

The tennis player also said that skipping Wimbledon allowed him to carry out intensive preparations for the US Open. The Russians have been suspended from the tournament due to the situation in Ukraine.

– Will the absence of Wimbledon at the US Open and the rest of the year help me? I really hope so, although you can never be sure. In any case, it allowed me to do quite a bit of three weeks of preparation, which is very rare in the middle of the year. Did a great job with the team. Physically and psychologically, I hope to be 100% ready by the end of the year,” Medvedev added.

The US Open will be held in New York from August 29 to September 11.
