German World No. 2 Alexander Zverev will not play at the US Open due to injury, according to Bild.
The tennis player feels he is unable to win the US Open after an ankle injury, which he suffered in early June during the Roland Garros semi-final. Previously, Zverev said that “he will not come back when he is 100% ready, but when he can win the tournament”.
We note that the 25-year-old German has given himself a “small chance” to participate in the US Open. If the upcoming training goes well, he can still fly to New York as soon as possible, the material claims. However, Zverev is expected to return to court in mid-September.
The second number in the ATP rankings was injured in a match with Spaniard Rafael Nadal and left the field in a wheelchair. A few days later, Zverev underwent surgery due to a rupture of three lateral ligaments in his right ankle.
The US Open will take place from August 29 to September 11.
