US Open director issues statement after Djokovic withdraws from tournament

US Open director Stacey Allaster commenting on former world number one’s statement Novak Djokovic to miss the tournament, announced that she was expecting the Serb in New York next year.

Djokovic announced on Thursday that he will not be playing at the US Open in 2022.

Novak is a great champion. It is very unfortunate that he is not participating in the US Open 2022 as he cannot enter the country due to the federal government’s decision on the vaccination policy for non-US citizens. We look forward to Novak’s return to the US Open in 2023,” Allaster said in a statement.

A few days ago, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) canceled the vaccination mandate for US citizens, raising hopes for the Serbian and his fans that it will soon be extended to non-citizens. On Wednesday, the CDC announced that citizens of other countries must prove they are fully vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine to enter the country.

Djokovic refuses to get vaccinated and has already missed the Australian Open.

The start of the US Open main draw is scheduled for August 29.
