Kostyuk: I respect Azarenka as an athlete, but this does not apply to her as a person

Ukrainian did not shake hands with rival from Belarus after the match

Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk refused to shake hands with an opponent from Belarus Victoria Azarenka after the second round match US Open. The Ukrainian woman expressed her attitude towards the athlete, whose state is participating in an aggressive war on the side of Russia.

“I just don’t think it would be right for me to shake hands, given the circumstances. I don’t think I know any of the players [из россии и беларуси]who would publicly condemn the war and the actions of their government.

“It is my choice. We had a great match. She is a fighter, I respect her as an athlete, but this does not apply to her as a person.

“Those who didn’t watch the match will say: “Here’s a bitch, Vika beat her, she talks a lot, so this is a fair score.” But in fact, we played on equal terms.

Kostyuk lost to Azarenka in straight sets in the second round. Recall that in doubles, the Ukrainian made it to the next round, beating a duet with the participation of another Ukrainian, Nadezhda Kichenok.

According to the results of the first round, Dayana Yastremskaya and Lesya Tsurenko left the US Open singles. Daria Snigur was defeated in the second round, and Angelina Kalinina withdrew from the tournament due to illness.
