The New York Yankees traded for San Francisco Giants outfielder Heliot Ramos just before Major League Baseball's trade deadline passed on Monday.
Ramos, a 2024 All-Star, joins a Yankees team that had been searching for right-handed batters. The 26-year-old Puerto Rican was drafted in the first round by the Giants in 2017 and has played 386 games across five seasons.
The Yankees sent starting pitcher Henry LaLane and infielder Kaeden Kent to the Giants for Ramos, who is not eligible for free agency until 2030. Ramos is hitting264 this season with nine home runs.
Ramos said the Giants have a lot of history and that it would obviously have a big place in his heart, but that he was very happy to be a New York Yankee.
General manager Brian Cashman said the Yankees also had conversations with the Detroit Tigers about Tarik Skubal and the Baltimore Orioles about Adley Rutschman but could not find a deal.
Yankees shake up infield
Later on Monday, the Yankees called up top prospect George Lombard Jr. and sent longtime shortstop Anthony Volpe to Triple-A in a bid to fix a problem position.
The move came after the Yankees landed infielder Luis Garcia Jr. from the Washington Nationals on Sunday night in exchange for a quartet of players. Garcia represents a major acquisition for a Yankees team that has been without injured sluggers Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton.
The New York-born, Dominican-raised Garcia is hitting283 with 23 home runs this season, numbers that outpace most of the Yankees' current batting order outside of Ben Rice. Over seven MLB seasons, Garcia is hitting268 with a302 on-base percentage and a431 slugging percentage, though this year he led the National League with a560 slugging percentage.
Where Garcia and Ramos will play
Much of Garcia's 2026 season has been spent at first base, though he previously played second base earlier in his career. The Yankees currently have Jazz Chisholm at second base, while Rice and Paul Goldschmidt have been splitting time at first. Chisholm has experience at third base, though that is not a preferable option for the Yankees.
The Yankees currently hold a 6.5-game edge in the Wild Card standings while trailing the Tampa Bay Rays by 2.5 games in the AL East.
