Atletico Madrid have refused to negotiate with FC Barcelona over the transfer of striker Julian Alvarez ahead of the September 1 Spanish transfer deadline.
With less than a week remaining before the window closes, Spanish clubs can only register new players until September 1. However, the months-long transfer saga involving the two La Liga clubs and the Argentine forward remains unresolved.
Barcelona, the reigning Spanish champions, are searching for a long-term successor to striker Robert Lewandowski, and manager Hansi Flick views Alvarez as his ideal target. Atletico officials refuse to sell their star player to their domestic rivals. While the capital club would accept offers of 150 million euros from foreign teams, they insist Barcelona must pay the full 500 million euro release clause set in Alvarez's contract.
Contract dispute and player frustration
Alvarez has fueled tensions by speaking for months about his desire to move to Barcelona. Reports in the Spanish media state that the striker's entourage feels cheated and betrayed by Atletico Madrid, and Alvarez is unhappy that the club will not consent to the transfer.
Atletico executives maintain that the club is the party most wronged in the dispute. Citing reliable club sources, Spanish newspaper Marca reported that Atletico views itself as the sole victim, arguing that a campaign based on lies and half-truths has caused the club both financial and social damage.
According to the report, decision-makers at Atletico state that the matter is about dignity rather than money. Club officials do not intend to grant the transfer request of a player who signed a contract valid until 2030 just two years ago. The conduct of Barcelona and Alvarez has led decision-makers at the Metropolitano stadium to end transfer talks with Barcelona, emphasizing that the chances of a sale to Barca are zero percent.
Fan backlash and board stance
Support for Alvarez among matchgoing fans has largely collapsed, with almost no one wishing to see the Argentine continue in Atletico colors. Alvarez was booed by home supporters when he came on as a second-half substitute in a recent league match against Villarreal.
Only the Atletico board continues to resist the move, leaving the forward's future unresolved as the registration deadline approaches.
