Polish football club Śląsk Wrocław will receive a €250,000 bonus after former winger Arnau Ortiz made his La Liga debut for Atletico Madrid against Malaga.
The 24-year-old Spanish winger was selected in the starting lineup by Atletico manager Diego Simeone for the opening fixture of the La Liga season. Ortiz played 57 minutes and delivered a solid performance on the pitch, coming exactly one year after his final match for Śląsk on August 20, 2025.
Atletico Madrid are one of the traditional powerhouses of Spanish football, competing at the highest level of La Liga. Śląsk Wrocław, based in Lower Silesia, are a historic Polish club competing in the Ekstraklasa, the top tier of Polish football.
Transfer agreement clauses
According to local newspaper Gazeta Wrocławska, Śląsk management secured financial protections when negotiating the transfer of Ortiz to Spain. The contract contained a specific performance clause ensuring additional earnings if the winger made an appearance in Spain's top division.
Gazeta Wrocławska reported that the debut milestone triggers a bonus payment of €250,000, equivalent to roughly 1 million Polish zlotys. In addition to the debut bonus, the deal guarantees Śląsk a share of the profit from any future sale of Ortiz, meaning further strong performances by the Spaniard could yield another windfall for the Polish side.
Journey from Ekstraklasa to La Liga
Ortiz originally joined Śląsk on a free transfer from Spanish club Girona. He featured in 39 competitive matches for Śląsk, but his output of three goals and two assists was considered modest for an offensive player.
Śląsk head coach Ante Simundza did not value the winger's abilities and sought to move him on. Following Śląsk's relegation from the Ekstraklasa, Atletico Madrid's reserve team approached the club to sign the player.
Śląsk officials accepted an initial transfer fee of approximately €300,000 for the unwanted winger. Ortiz then completed a highly successful campaign in the Spanish third division with Atletico's secondary team.
During his season in the third tier, Ortiz scored 23 goals and provided six assists, helping Atletico's reserves finish third in the table. His performances impressed Simeone, who brought the 24-year-old into the senior squad for pre-season friendlies. Ortiz maintained his good form during pre-season, convincing the Argentine manager to start him in the opening match of the La Liga season.
Impact on Śląsk Wrocław transfer window
The unexpected cash influx provides valuable financial flexibility for Śląsk's sports department as the Polish transfer window prepares to close on September 9.
Squad reinforcements are needed following a serious injury suffered by Michał Mokrzycki roughly a dozen days ago. Śląsk, who are competing back in the top flight as a promoted team, currently sit 12th in the Ekstraklasa standings with five points from five matches.
