Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has reunited with his family following an ugly feud and a $12 million lawsuit over missing funds.

The NFL star revealed that he has reconnected with his estranged relatives in recent months after years of legal disputes involving his father and brother.

Mayfield told the Tampa Bay Times that restoring family ties has been a positive step. "In the past few months, I've been reconnected with my family," Mayfield said. "It's been good. Also, for them to have two grandbabies, it's tough."

Mayfield and his wife, Emily, took their daughter Kova to Texas in April 2025 around her first birthday to meet her extended family for the first time. The couple also welcomed a son, Maverick, earlier this year.

"What's in the past is in the past," Mayfield said regarding the Texas trip. "(My wife) Emily and I took (daughter Kova) down right around her first birthday... it was the first time they met her, and you (could) tell it just melted them."

Allegations over missing funds

The legal rift began in 2024 when Mayfield filed a lawsuit against his father's company, Camwood Capital Management Group, claiming breach of contract. The petition alleged that between 2018 and 2021, the firm and its subsidiaries took $12 million from the Mayfields without their knowledge or consent.

On the website for Camwood Capital Management Group, Mayfield's father, James Mayfield, is listed as founder and senior managing director, while his brother, Matt Mayfield, works as managing director.

The lawsuit claimed that substantial sums of money belonging to Baker and Emily Mayfield were transferred from their accounts to businesses linked to his father and brother. "Petitioners have been unable to account for, or obtain information about, the current location and/or status of those funds," the suit read.

Following the 2024 filing, the Mayfields reached a confidential settlement agreement with Camwood Capital Management Group, with the quarterback expected to recoup nearly $12 million plus interest. However, another lawsuit was subsequently filed claiming the agreement had not been fulfilled.

"To date, Camwood Capital has not repaid even one dollar under the Settlement Agreement," the second suit stated. "As a result, Plaintiffs have been left with no choice but to file suit for breach of the Settlement Agreement to recover the assets improperly taken from them."

Progress and forgiveness

Despite the court battles, Mayfield indicated that the family is now healing after he chose to offer forgiveness. "You can't put yourself on a pedestal and act like I haven't made mistakes in my life. I had the ability to forgive and that was what I wanted to get across," Mayfield told the Tampa Bay Times.

He added that the family remains focused on building their relationship moving forward. "But we're here and the door is open. The past few months, we have made good progress and began reconnecting," Mayfield said.

Mayfield plays as the starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a professional American football team based in Tampa, Florida, that competes in the National Football League (NFL).
