Max Verstappen has signed a major contract extension with Red Bull Racing that will keep the four-time world champion with the team until the end of the 2030 Formula 1 season.

The deal was officially announced on Thursday in the days leading up to the Dutch Grand Prix, where Verstappen will race as the local fan favourite. The extension puts a definitive end to months of driver market speculation surrounding his future in the sport.

Oracle Red Bull Racing confirmed the agreement in an official statement, expressing immense pride in securing Verstappen's long-term future and prolonging what the team described as one of the most successful and defining partnerships in Formula 1 history.

Verstappen first entered the Red Bull ecosystem in 2014 through the company's junior driver development program. He made his Formula 1 debut in 2015 for Scuderia Toro Rosso before being promoted to Red Bull Racing in 2016, winning on his debut for the senior team in Spain.

Red Bull Racing, based in Milton Keynes in the United Kingdom, was established in 2005 after energy drinks company Red Bull purchased Jaguar Racing. The team previously won four consecutive drivers' and constructors' titles with Sebastian Vettel between 2010 and 2013 before Verstappen ushered in its second dominant era.

Since his promotion, the Dutch driver has claimed four consecutive world championship titles, starting with his historic victory in 2021 that ended the long-standing dominance of Mercedes and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

That 2021 title race concluded with one of the most epic and controversial season finales in motorsport history, in which Verstappen snatched the championship on the final lap of the final race following a late-safety-car restart.

The 2021 finale took place at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, where a late restart decision by race control allowed a one-lap sprint to the finish. Hamilton had led the majority of the race before Verstappen, on fresher tires, executed a pass on the final lap to claim his first crown.

Following that breakthrough, the driver nicknamed Mad Max added four straight drivers' crowns, two Constructors' World Championships, and 71 Grand Prix victories to his record, achieving every one of those milestones while driving for Red Bull.

Transition to power unit manufacturer

The timing of Verstappen's contract extension comes at a decisive moment in Red Bull's evolution. The team is currently preparing to compete as an independent Formula 1 power unit manufacturer for the first time in its history.

Formula 1 is introducing sweeping new power unit regulations for 2026, featuring increased electrical output and a mandate for 100 percent sustainable synthetic fuels. To prepare for the shift, Red Bull built its own state-of-the-art Red Bull Powertrains facility in Milton Keynes, partnering with American automaker Ford for technical development.

Red Bull explained in its statement that ongoing investment in team technical infrastructure and facilities, alongside a commitment to a long-term vision based on its core values, is establishing a firm foundation for the team's next era, with Verstappen positioned directly at the center of the project.

Verstappen stated that he was very happy to sign the extension, referring to Red Bull as his second family. He said the team possesses the best people in Formula 1 and expressed excitement to keep working together with everyone to return to the top of the standings.

He noted that he originally arrived with hopes of winning races, describing their subsequent achievements as wonderful after sharing memorable moments and four world titles. He added that continuing with the team he has represented for his entire career is deeply special and something he always intended to do.

Leadership trust and team outlook

Laurent Mekies, chief executive officer and team principal of Oracle Red Bull Racing, emphasized that retaining Verstappen and securing the best driver on the grid is fantastic news for everyone within the organization.

Mekies remarked that very few partnerships in sports history manage to achieve what Verstappen and Red Bull have accomplished. He explained that the decision to continue their journey together is grounded in trust built over many years, as well as Verstappen's faith in the team's staff, culture, and long-term vision.

In Formula 1, the team principal serves as the chief operational and strategic executive, managing engineers, trackside operations, and driver relationships. Maintaining continuity in driver leadership is regarded by technical analysts as essential when adapting to major technical regulation overhauls.

Mekies noted that the bond between driver and team has been forged not only through championship victories and intense track battles, but also through difficult moments. He concluded that those shared experiences have only served to strengthen the relationship, creating one of Formula 1's greatest success stories.

The Dutch Grand Prix is held at Circuit Zandvoort, located along the North Sea coast of the Netherlands. The historic venue returned to the Formula 1 calendar in 2021 after a 36-year absence, drawing massive crowds of orange-clad fans known as the Orange Army to support Verstappen.

Verstappen will return to the track at Zandvoort this weekend for his home race, entering the event with his long-term future with Red Bull locked in through the 2030 season.
