Rory McIlroy Warns Returning LIV Golfers Face Tough Road

Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler have questioned the value of LIV Golf players returning to the PGA Tour ahead of the BMW Championship.

Rory McIlroy Warns Returning LIV Golfers Face Tough Road

Rory McIlroy has warned LIV Golf players that returning to the PGA Tour will involve a tough road back while questioning their overall value.

Speaking ahead of the BMW Championship, the four-time major winner argued that the PGA Tour remains in a strong position and indicated that any golfers attempting to re-join would not be welcomed back immediately.

World number one Scottie Scheffler joined McIlroy in raising doubts over immediate returns, suggesting that any players wishing to return must face penalties before competing on the PGA Tour or the DP World Tour.

The PGA Tour represents the premier professional golf circuit in North America, while the Saudi Arabia-funded LIV Golf League launched in 2022 as a high-profile rival circuit. The BMW Championship serves as the second playoff event in the PGA Tour's FedExCup season finale.

Uncertain Future for LIV Golf

LIV Golf faces an uncertain future after Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) confirmed earlier this year that it would not fund the circuit beyond 2026.

The financial withdrawal led to the cancellation of LIV's season-ending Team Championship in Michigan.

LIV Golf chief executive Scott O'Neil previously stated that the circuit is building its next chapter and has secured an unnamed lead investor to keep operating, but many players are understood to be weighing up their options.

Bryson DeChambeau revealed in May that players on the breakaway tour were left surprised by the decision of the Saudi fund to pull its backing.

Player Movement and Re-entry Deals

Several prominent LIV Golf players have been linked with a potential return to the PGA Tour, including Jon Rahm and DeChambeau.

Brooks Koepka was permitted to rejoin the PGA Tour in February under its Returning Member Program, while Patrick Reed is eligible to feature again from September.

McIlroy argued that the window for similar smooth transitions has closed, questioning what value returning players bring after leaving.

"I would argue, have they brought value to LIV? I think the PGA Tour's in a really good spot," McIlroy said. "Look, eventually they will be welcomed back. I'm not part of these discussions, but I'm pretty sure they're not going to be welcomed back straight away."

Referring to Koepka's return route, McIlroy added: "If they were offered this returning member program back in February, the one that Brooks took, then yeah, maybe, but that has come and gone. I think it was said at the time that the deal that they might get going forward, if they do decide to come back, isn't going to be as good as the one that Brooks got. I would say it's going to be a tough, tough road back."

Skeptical Stance on Breakaway Tour

LIV Golf remains hopeful that its proposed 2027 schedule will include five marquee Team Championships held across five continents, along with five team Signature Events arranged around major championships.

However, McIlroy maintained his long-standing criticism of the circuit and reiterated his belief that the PGA Tour remains the ultimate stage for top professionals.

"I think I feel like I've kept my position consistent that LIV has never been a good thing for the game," McIlroy explained. "Whatever 2.0 looks like, if it even happens, they say they're trying to be more collaborative and all that."

McIlroy added: "This is the best platform for the top professional golfers in the world. Were there some things at the start of LIV that the PGA Tour could have done better? Sure."

Reflecting on the initial rift involving Phil Mickelson, McIlroy said: "You think back to the start with say, Phil unhappy with some stuff or whatever it was. Surely that just warranted a conversation instead of blowing the entire professional game up and doing something else?"

McIlroy, who previously voiced concerns regarding PGA Tour administration and future scheduling during the US Open, also addressed the impact of LIV's downsizing.

"I don't take any personal satisfaction of people losing jobs, that doesn't seem right," McIlroy said. "I've always felt like this is the best place to play professional golf. I'm pretty sure if the PGA Tour were handed six billion dollars it would have done a better job with it."

Calls for Return Penalties

Scottie Scheffler also voiced doubts over immediate returns, though he acknowledged that top LIV performers would add competition.

Tyrrell Hatton and Joaquin Niemann are among the players who have recorded victories on the LIV Golf circuit this season.

"When we talk about the best players, LIV has a few players that are really good," Scheffler said. "I think the depth that we have on our tour is bit unmatched. I think when you look at the higher levels of LIV Golf there's definitely some players that would provide a lot of value to the Tour and guys that I love competing against."

Scheffler stressed that returning players must face sanctions, leaving specific terms to PGA Tour management.

"I think going forward there obviously has to be some sort of penalties," Scheffler said. "What those are, I'll let Rolapp and all those guys figure it out. Whatever happens with LIV, whether those guys want to leave, you've got to ask them."

Scheffler added: "I think, for me, being able to compete against the best players in the world is what I want. There's certainly some guys on that tour that can compete out here. I look forward to the chance to compete with them more often."

Tour Restructuring and Broadcast Info

The player comments come as PGA Tour chief executive Brian Rolapp considers significant structural modifications to the tour from 2028, including potential promotion and relegation systems.

Live coverage of the BMW Championship begins on Thursday, broadcasting from 3pm on Sky Sports+ and from 5:30pm on Sky Sports Golf.
